This article guides you on how to choose the right carpet styles for your home.
The right carpet can pull a room together or make it terribly drab, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. Although most people look at carpets and think ‘convenience’, the truth is that they’re very much part of the atmosphere of the home. Hence, if you really want to make an impact, here’s how to pick the right carpet to meet your needs:

As to Material
There are several materials currently used for carpets:
Nylon
Nylon is the ultimate choice if you’re looking for something durable, long-lasting, and easy to clean. It’s perfect for high-traffic areas and homes with pets and children. It doesn’t exactly feel nice to the touch, but it will be serviceable for years. Best used for living rooms and hallways.
Polyester
Soft to the touch, polyester resists stains easily enough. Once the stain gets to it however, it’s going to be incredibly tough to clean. Unlike nylon, it doesn’t really last long. It’s perfect for single households, condominiums, apartment, and showpiece rooms. Ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
Olefin
The ideal replacement for nylon if you want something less expensive – olefin is stain and milder resistant. It also handles high traffic areas well although not as durable as nylon. This is ideal for family homes.
Triextas
This one is fairly new so we don’t really know whether they’d last as long as nylon. However, when it comes to stain resistance – nothing can match triextas in the market. Hence, if you expect lots of spills and dirt from kids and pets, this might be the better choice.
Wool
Definitely a luxurious choice, it’s the kind of carpet you’d want to install in rooms where appearance is of prime importance. Soft and spill-resistant, it’s easy enough to clean and highly durable. Of course, the price tag can be quite intimidating.
As to Quality
Different materials for carpets also carry different qualities of their own. For example, a 100% Mohawk Nylon is usually better than plain wool carpeting. Here’s how you choose good quality carpets based on their labels:
Face Weight
This refers to the ounces of fiber per square yard of the carpet. Look for something that rests from 34 to 80, preferring higher number models.
Density Rating
Look for something along 20,000 densities or more. This refers to the thickness and tightness of the fibers. If you can easily see the bottom of the carpet through the fibers if you bend it backward, then this is of poor quality. Note that high-density carpets will remain plush longer.
Tuft Twist
Refers to hoe many times the tufts are twisted to form a tight strand. Ideally, you should get something 5 or more.
Brand Warranty
Opt for a carpet with an extensive warranty – at least 10 years would be perfect. You might also want to check out the brand offering the warranty since not all companies honor their coverage. Make sure you go for a brand with a good customer feedback.
Once you’ve made a decision when it comes to material and composition, it’s time to focus on the pattern and style of the carpeting. The right style and pattern can actually make a room seem bigger or smaller, depending on your personal preferences.
