Are you currently studying for your IELTS exam, particularly the speaking section? This is for you.
Prepared by: Dave Calpito
What is your job?
I was a public school teacher in the Philippines prior to moving to Welland, Ontario. I served as a Senior High School teacher, specifically teaching Media and Information Literacy as well as Creative Writing. But now, I work as a Service Crew in Tim Hortons, a well-known Canadian restaurant.
Where do you work?
As previously stated, I am currently employed by Tim Hortons, specifically in its Welland store. There, I work as a Service Crew member, where I prepare food, provide customer service, and clean the restaurant and dining areas, which is very different from what I used to do in the Philippines.
Why did you choose that job?
To be honest, I chose that job since I believe the application process is simple. Because we are new to Canada, I have made up my mind to take any full-time job that becomes available to me. Despite the fact that it is very different from what I used to do in my home country, I have decided to take the job on a temporary basis because I need to feed my family. Later on, however, I intend to look for work that is similar to what I used to do before migrating to Canada.
Is it a popular job in your country?
Yes, I suppose so. Because there are Tim Hortons stores in almost every part of Canada, it is reasonable to assume that many Canadians work for this company, which is the most well-known restaurant in the country. A lot of my friends work or used to work for Tim Hortons because, for them, being a service crew is their survival job, so there have undoubtedly been a lot of people who have benefited from this company.
Do you like your job?
Because I had never worked as a service crew before and had previously worked in another field, it was a huge challenge for me to really get the hang of being a service crew. However, because I learned a lot about customer service and food preparation, I ended up enjoying my job. However, if given the opportunity to look for a job that is somewhat similar or close to my previous work, it would be a sweet treat for me.
Do you get on well with your colleagues?
Yes, absolutely. Despite the fact that I am new to this field of work and a newcomer to Canada, I believe that my good working relationships with my coworkers have helped me adapt well at work. If it hadn't been for the kindness of my coworkers, I would not have enjoyed my time in my new company as much as I have, which is a good thing because, unlike before, I have learned to enjoy what I do.
What was your first day like?
My first day at work was a disaster, as are all first days. I was certainly perplexed as to what I should do first. I was having trouble taking orders and preparing food for customers. Because the job was so different from what I do, I would have quit sooner if it hadn't been for the kindness of my coworkers.
